LOST TOKYO
Yanesen and Beyond

Description

A visual record of Tokyo before it disappeared.

Long before redevelopment transformed much of the city, neighborhoods such as Yanaka, Nezu, Hongo, and Kanda still preserved the atmosphere of old Tokyo.

Captured between 2004 and 2005, these photographs document streets, wooden houses, shopping arcades, and everyday scenes that have since disappeared or changed beyond recognition.

Through 86 carefully selected photographs, this collection preserves fragments of a quieter Tokyo that once existed beneath the city's constantly changing skyline.

About This Collection

Tokyo is a city that constantly rebuilds itself.

Buildings disappear, neighborhoods evolve, and familiar streets gradually give way to new developments. Yet beneath today's skyline once existed a quieter city of wooden houses, narrow alleyways, family-run shops, and streets shaped by generations of everyday life.

Photographed between 2004 and 2005, this collection captures parts of Tokyo before many of these places were demolished, redeveloped, or dramatically transformed. Rather than focusing on famous landmarks, it explores the ordinary neighborhoods where the character of old Tokyo quietly endured.

More than a collection of documentary photographs, these images preserve the atmosphere of a city in transition—a visual archive of places that can no longer be experienced in quite the same way today.
