ISE GRAND SHRINE — Before and After the Shikinen Sengu is a photographic record of Ise Jingu captured between 2008 and 2013.

Across spring, late summer, and winter, the photographs follow the shrine through changing seasons and toward one of the most important moments in its continuing history—the 62nd Shikinen Sengu in 2013.

Weathered shrine buildings slowly merge with the surrounding forest, while beside them, new spaces and structures quietly prepare for renewal. After the Sengu, fresh pale wood appears where the old buildings once stood, beginning another twenty-year cycle.

Through 84 photographs, this collection documents not only the transformation of Ise Grand Shrine, but also the remarkable continuity of a sacred landscape that has been renewed across generations.

The place remains, yet no moment is ever the same.
